Be the life of the party and get your friends into the fun game of One up, One down. What’s a good party without an amusing drinking game, right?
What is “one up, one down” all about? The secret is about the position of your arms: one up, one down, two up or two down. That’s it! Keep on reading to learn more.
What you will need
Like most party drinking games, you need a bunch of your friends, some drinks and beverages. Form a circle of 10 to 12 friends, or even more. There’s no restriction on the number. Have your friends grab their favorite drinks and make a start.
Oh, and make sure a player or two know how to play the game so the game can keep going with some aware of the rule while others are on the hunt for it.
How to play this fun game
Steps
The dealer starts the game and says, ‘one up, one down’, and then tells the next player to say either or just gives them a chance to utter a statement.
Some players might guess the rule right away, while others might take some time to catch on. There might even be luck tries as one player says one of the four allowed answers by chance without understanding the trick and in another round fails to answer correctly again.
If the answer is correct, the dealer will say it’s correct and will move on to the next player.
But if the player gives any answer other than that, the dealer tells them to take a drink… chug chug chug!
So, what is the secret?
We got you covered… it’s about the position of the arms.
Whether it is holding a drink or lying on the table. Whether it is around a friend’s back or in your lap.
If both hands are occupied, you say ‘two up’. If one hand is in the lap, and the other is holding a drink, it’s one up, one down. And, if both hands are on the table, it’s two down.
The game goes around in a circle as some players figure out the rule while others are still baffled and have to keep taking a sip or a shot.
Often, most of the players must have caught on to the rule by this point and the game comes to an end with the dealer revealing the rule to all.
Game Rules
Don’t reveal
First and foremost, if you know the rule, don’t tell it. That’s the ground rule of the game that everyone keeps quiet about the trick, plays along and let the others keep guessing.
Take A Shot Or A Sip
It’s not just any party game, it is a brain baffler, ice breaker, and a fun drinking game.
Well, what do you do in a drinking game? Drink, obviously!
You have to drink from your cup or any beverage you have when you get the answer wrong. Be it a sip or shot or a whole chug. But one has to face the consequences if one does not get an answer right.
How the dealer can make the game more interesting
One up, one down game can’t work well if the dealer is passive.
The dealer starts and plans the game by playing tricks on the players, but sometimes taking a hit himself/herself too. S/he can answer wrong once to give a clue or join in the fun.
He can also play some hoaxes when most of the players haven’t guessed the rule but when the players catch up, they are supposed to keep it to themselves and not spoil the fun for others.
The dealer decides what punishment to give and s/he can even choose whether the player takes a little vodka sip or an excruciatingly pungent shot.
What to do with players who don’t drink?
Now, there might be players who can’t or don’t drink. The penalty is one of the fun factors of the game.
So if there isn’t a drinking penalty, there is still a penance to face by the players.
And what best way to do that than to play a round of truth or dare with them. It adds spice to the party, the penalty is fulfilled and the fun prevails.
Warning
Please note that drinking is for individuals aged 18 and above. This is definitely not a children’s game. Don’t drink excessively. Keep yourself and your loved ones safe by keeping drinking to a minimal and not driving after drinking.
