What kind of shoes should you bring to Burning Man?

August 6, 2021 by Casey Hayes Leave a Comment

Burning Man is a yearly event held in the western United States. It emphasizes creativity, self-expression, independence, and community.

Joining Burning Man is a life-changing event. Yet, it may also be a difficult task.

Burning Man takes place in the Black Rock Desert, which is a harsh environment. You have to equip yourself with lifesaving things, such as robust outfits, facemasks, or even goggles. Among them, a pair of shoes could save your camp best!

No matter if you are men or women, boots appear to be the best choice for this hostile environment. They offer cushioning and protection for your feet. Bringing some extra alternatives is also a great idea. Walking in the same footwear all day can hurt your feet.

What Kind Of Shoes Should You Bring To Burning Man?

Hiking or work boots, military boots

A pair of work boots or hiking boots offer solid foot support. They work well on camp setup and teardown days.

If possible, you’d better join Burning Man with the boots that you have worn for a few times. They will provide you the best sense of comfort.

It would be ideal to add more than one type of boots in your backpack. You don’t need to worry about getting uncomfortable while wearing them all day.

Boots offer solid foot support

Ugg-like boots

Burners strongly advise packing footwear with a genuine fleece inside, such as Ugg-like boots.

These boots are ideal for a variety of occasions. They might get colder than you think, both at night and in the morning. So, including some warm, comfy alternatives for your feet is essential.

You can wear these boots during the day since wool breathes. Moreover, avoid imitation-look footwear that doesn’t offer a genuine fleece inside.

They won’t provide you with the same level of comfort. You don’t have to buy Uggs. Yet, your boots should feature a natural wool or fleece interior.

The playa dust may damage your boots. Fortunately, you can put Uggs-like boots or those with fleece in the washing machine.

Of course, they cannot get back to their original form. All shoes do. The changes in form isn’t a disadvantage for bringing Uggs to the Burning  Man.

The Uggs boots are Burners’ favorite

Slip-on shoes

It’s a huge benefit to have easy shoes on and off while still giving some comfort. Lace-up shoes need a commitment, and certain camps and interactive areas may be no-shoe areas. These activities require you to remove your shoes before entering.

Instead of laces, some campers opt for boots equipped with a velcro strap. They’re fantastic. With this insertion, you have the comfort of a boot while still having an easy on-and-off solution.

Regular sneakers

A pair of regular sneakers can be comfortable. You also don’t need to care if they get caked in dust.

Just like boots, worn sneakers may offer more benefits. You don’t have to spend money on the new ones.

Cushioning and sole quality are the most important factors for choosing the right sneaker. They can protect your feet, but it would be more perfect to feel at ease in your sneakers, right?

Mid-rise chucks

Mid-rise chucks often come with sufficient foot support and stability. They also feature ankle support. These factors make the mid-chucks suitable for Burning Man.

You need to ensure their cushioning so that you can feel comfortable wearing them in the desert.

Sandals

Sandals can be quite useful. Some individuals adore and stay in them. They may, however, be lacking in support. Wearing shoes with minimal support all day on the playa can tire you.

In addition, the dust from the playa may get into your shoes, then go under your feet. If your feet sweat in the heat, it can combine with the dust and turn into sticky mud.

If you still decide to bring sandals, try to give your feet more care at night by cleaning and moisturizing them.

Wearing sandals all day, however, is not advisable.

Sandals may not an ideal choice

Flip-Flop

At Burning Man, wearing flip-flops is a common mistake for rookies. You could get “playa foot,” a pain caused by an alkali dust burn. Remember that Burning Man’s desert dust is really the remnants of the alkaline lake base.

Pack vinegar along to keep your feet dust-free and clean. Because vinegar’s acid counteracts the alkalinity from the dust, it dissolves the dust even better than water.

Ventilated Shoes vs. Hiking Boots

Some Burners had unwilling experience with ventilated shoes. These shoes made the wearers feel uneasy and a bit disgusted.

They even cleaned their feet three times a day and used up clean socks in the middle of the week. They were unquestionably dropping powder from their shoes on a daily basis.

You will not experience such things when wearing high-quality hiking boots. They are good to go all day with a pair of socks.

Going Barefoot On The Playa

Playa foot often results from not wearing closed shoes and socks. Exposing your feet to the desert surface is also a popular cause. While this ailment is not life-threatening, it makes you uncomfortable.

To avoid this, you should hide your feet as much as possible.

It would help if you wash your feet carefully and apply some moisturizing lotion overnight. Cleaning your feet before wearing socks is also beneficial.

Try to cover your feet on Burning Man

Tips For Your Feet At Burning Man

Choosing the right shoes

Don’t focus too much on appearance. You are camping on a hostile surface. The first and foremost thing to consider is to choose suitable shoes. It would help a lot if you can walk, run, bike, or even dance comfortably in your shoes.

You can easily have a playa foot at any time. Please try to cover your feet as much as possible.

How many pairs of socks should you bring?

It depends on how long you camp. Two pairs of socks a day is ideal (one for day and one for night use). Remember to put on the socks when they are clean. Storing unused socks in a large ziplock bag is necessary.

What kinds of socks should you bring?

You should carry a selection of socks with you. They must be light and tall in order to provide comfort while still protecting your feet.

Smartwool socks, which come in a variety of layers and heights, look to be an excellent option. Thick, cozy wool socks are ideal for cold evenings out or sleeping.

Cotton and wool socks that are thinner might also be quite beneficial. Don’t forget, though, to choose the wool that breathes.

Merino and alpaca socks are also popular among Burners.

Socks can help protect your feet–

Footcare

On the playa, it’s critical to keep your feet protected. You should wash your feet thoroughly every day and moisturize them before going to bed and before leaving the house.

If discomfort occurs, bathe your feet in the water and thoroughly wash them. Be sure to clean any dust buried in the skin’s pores.

You can also use a latex foot pad for a little extra cushioning. This addition will help you feel more at ease and avoid the playa foot.

Boots decoration

You may feel free to decorate your boots in Burning Man. If durable boots fail to look stunning, make them stunning on your own.
