Is Burning Man A Cult? Why Do People Call It So?

August 9, 2021 by Casey Hayes Leave a Comment

Burning Man is an annual camping event in the western United States. It focuses on art, self-expression, self-reliance, and community. However, it’s far from a typical vacation.

Burning Man has succeeded in constructing a universe where people apply different rules. Some festivals make a connection to the cultural world out there.

However, Burning Man is not a cult. It looks more like a cultural experience. That’s large enough that some of the individuals who join it may appear to be cult-like. They can even arrange their groups in cult-like ways. Some Burning Man festivals also encourage this style.

Is Burning Man Really A Cult?

Some people misunderstand the organization of Burning Man. But, if you have joined and know how to enjoy yourself, you can be sure that Burning Man is not a cult.

What is a cult?

A cult is a movement or a group united by a common belief in a charismatic leader or philosophy. It has a spiritual system that contains all of the solutions to life’s problems. The cult also gives a unique answer obtained by obeying the leader’s instructions.

Cults frequently utilize tactics to change members’ behaviors, such as thought-stopping methods and creating an “us-versus-them” perspective.

The leader trains the members to use thought-stopping tricks to avoid concerns about the cult from influencing their minds, typically by repeating a crucial phrase.

Once you join a cult, it seems hard to leave. You may have a strong commitment to that community.

How about Burning Man?

The Burning Man can be spiritual. There is a temple in the location.

Some Burners see it as one of the most peaceful places on the planet. It’s a spot where you may meditate, cry, and think. Campers may come to grieve the death of their loved ones and to seek forgiveness for past errors.

A temple is a place where you leave feeling lighter and more liberated. Not everyone in the camp is religious. They do, however, trust in the healing power of the temple.

The temple is only for praying and wishing

However, the temple is for praying, wishing, and asking for forgiveness. The organizers don’t force you to join or to repeat any word.

Burning Man theme camp is the place where people gather to have fun. There is no training course about culture or behaviors.

The belief exists for a tiny number of people. However, it is only in their brains and not a part of the overall Burner culture. It also appears to attract those who are more sensitive to cults than the ordinary person.

Many people perceive their Burning Man experiences as spiritual or personally transformative. It does foster a sense of belonging. Cults have those aspects as well, but the similarities end there.

Burning Man is not a cult also because you can leave any time. Nobody will stop you. It is unnecessary to attend the camping the whole week. You can even leave and then come back.

No one can prevent you from leaving the camp

Is Burning Man A Cult That Takes Advantage Of Its Followers Financially?

Is Burning Man some sort of hippie cult?

Burning Man is not about hippies

Burning Man isn’t just a gathering of hippies in the desert. It’s impossible to compare Burning Man to Woodstock, no matter how much people want to.

A Burner’s average annual salary is $67,000. 33% of Burners have earned a university degree.

The atmosphere of Burning Man is all about love and peace. Burners, on the other hand, are motivated and well-organized individuals. At Burning Man, there may be a lot of EDM. However, this is also true in regular non-hippie cultures.

Why do People think Burning Man is a cult?

There are some reasons for people mistaking Burning Man’s conception.

  • First, Burning Man may be spiritual. You can see campers gathering to pray in a temple. However, this activity is not compulsory.
  • Second, many Burners adhere to what we would refer to as “woo woo” religious norms. However, neither Burning Man nor the hippie culture is all about this.
  • Third, some campers may take drugs. This situation is also not unheard of in mainstream society. There’s more to Burning Man and hippy culture than that.
