How To Play “Don’t Look Behind You” Game?

June 6, 2022 by Casey Hayes Leave a Comment

“Don’t look behind you” game is a scary game. You will find the rule simple, but the way you play it makes it creepy.

You face the wall, count to a number, and everyone behind you is trying to reach you. When you turn back, they have to freeze. Please note that you play the game in darkness with a childhood item in your hand.

If you think of an idea for your Halloween party, keep reading and learn how this game pulls it off.

Disclaimer

Please note that we’re writing this for the sake of entertainment and because people like reading about things. You do it at your own risk if you choose to try.

What Do You Need?

Before starting the game, make sure to gather all the necessary tools:

  • Lights

Primary source: You may use the room’s light as the primary light source, but make sure you’re close to the switch.

Second source: This light should have a different power supply from the first. For example, if your primary light runs on electricity, the secondary one should work on batteries.

  • Childhood item

Use something that reminds you of your childhood, such as a photo, a shirt, etc. A stuffed animal or a doll is unsuitable because people consider them “possessed objects.”

  • Chalk
  • A quiet room
  • Something that makes noise (optional): mables, rice, or chips

How To Play The Game?

The rule of “Don’t look behind you” is simple. You can catch it at ease with our instructions.

Set up

Clearing the space and arranging players’ positions are what you need to prepare for “Don’t look behind you.” To be more precise:

  • Hide the secondary light on your person and make your playground as clutter-free as possible.
  • Use the chalk to mark the seeker’s starting point on the floor.
  • If you’re going to use things to alert the seeker, set them on the floor about a step or two away from where you will stand.
  • Hold the childhood item in your hand.
  • When you’re ready for this interesting adventure, turn off all the lights.
The playground must be totally dark

How to play

Now, it’s time to start. Imagine that you are the counter and your friends are all seekers. The game will go like this:

  • Now, stand at the marked area, face the wall and say: “I want to play a game.”
  • Before you turn around, you will count to X (select your playtime), and everyone must freeze.
  • They may move when you are not looking. Moreover, they can only take one step forward at a time.

The problem here is that you can feel a lot of things in the dark. Even when your friends don’t make any move, you can sense something weird in the atmosphere.

  • Listen carefully during the game. If you feel that something is reaching close to you, turn on the light, and the game is over.
  • If the primary light can’t work, use your secondary one.
  • Once there is any light source, the game ends.

Typically, “Don’t look behind you” sounds like “Red light, green light” or any “Don’t move” game. You have to catch the move of your friends to win.

If you are new to this kind of activity, this video can tell you how to throw it and have fun with it.

Of course, the idea for “Don’t look behind you” is different. People don’t play it only for fun but to experience the ghost-following feeling.

Why do you play it in the dark? It’s where the spirits come up, or at least you feel them around you.

Rules

It’s important to clarify that all players must freeze once you turn, not when you look. Even if you can’t see any, it doesn’t imply there isn’t something there.

There may be no winner. The goal of this activity is how long the game takes place and what the players experience in the dark.

The idea of this activity is horror

How To End The Game?

Your adventure ends when the light comes, and there are two ways to make it happen:

  • When someone touches your right shoulder;
  • When you feel something is coming close to you.

In the first case, the seeker that gets to you first ends the game. He has been trying to take one step at a time in the dark until he can reach you.

In the second case, the one that you feel doesn’t have to be any seeker. We mean the “spirit.” If you experience such a thing, end your game immediately.

Please note that even when you call it an end, it may not be. It will continue to follow afterward.

Notes And Advice For Players

The key to “Don’t Look Behind You” is that you play it in the dark. No one knows what can happen.

If you still like this idea, follow these notes and advice before you start:

Spirit involvement

We never determined what might happen if the spirit ended the game; all we agreed on was that something bad would come. You should give up quickly.

According to research conducted in the years, many of these types of games involve gaming with a spirit since most of them require a host.

Room size

The size of your playing area depends on the number of seekers and where they stand at the beginning.

Ensure that the room size is not within reach of you or other players. Typically, the seekers should walk at least ten steps to get to you.

Cheating

Although cheating is not advisable, you can set something, such as chips or marbles, on the floor to make the game harder for seekers.

The idea is that if something gets within your arm’s reach, you’ll notice it and be able to end it.

However, the marbles are quite dangerous. Everyone has to move in the dark. How unfortunate it is for someone to step on and slip.

One more thing to remember: the marbles may indicate the ghost. Once you hear the noise from these objects, there may be spirits trying to get to you.

As aforementioned, things that can make noise are optional for such games. If you want to raise the challenge level, feel free to add them.

Marbles become creepy when put in the dark and quite place

Rules

Feel free to change the rule as long as you keep everyone playing in a completely dark room.

Some people change the sequence to “Creep as I sleep.” You can also challenge the seekers by asking them not to make any noise while moving behind you.

What To Do When The Game Is Not Working/ Bad Signs?

You may play “Don’t look behind you” to explore the spirit world. If it doesn’t work for you, the experience can be bad. So what can you do in this case?

First, make sure that the room is completely dark. Your setup turns out to be meaningless if you notice any lit beam in the space.

Next, there shouldn’t be any fake indicators, like when your friends try to scare you with weird noises.

Finally, ensure that you are attentive during the game. Put all your effort in listening to the sound in the air or from the marbles.

Ghost-following feeling is an interesting adventure. Yet, failing to try it can be a good sign since you don’t have to become obsessed with the dark for a long time.

The game may not work for you

Real-Life Experiences From Other Players

What do you expect to try this activity? The three cases below help you picture how creepy this game is.

Nothing happens

You try all the steps, and nothing happens to you. “Don’t look behind you” now turns out to be a “Red light, green light” dark version.

Obsession

Obsession is the most common experience that players encounter. If you have such a thing, you play the real “Don’t look behind you.”

Some people said that they heard weird sounds while facing the wall. Of course, the sound doesn’t come from the marbles or the seekers.

Others felt as if someone were whispering to them, urging them to follow the creepy voice.

Feeling an unidentified object approaching you is even more obsessing and frightening than seeing it in front of you.

The scariest thing comes after the game. Many reported that something kept following them. But when they turned their back, it disappeared.

The obsession may last for days or weeks. It gets worse when you go into the darkness or when the night comes.

Genuine images

This case is the worst and also rarest. Some people deem “Don’t look behind you” as a ghost-summoning activity. In certain situations, it really is.

The experience is different from person to person

Conclusion

“Don’t look behind you game” that makes you obsessed for days. Make sure you are ready for it. Even if you can be, do not play alone.

Hopefully, this post has given a great idea for your Halloween party. If you need any further information, please feel free to ask. Thank you for reading!
